Stephen was a eighteen year old high school senior who was manifesting quite a few alcohol-related issues at school. Consequently, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be permitted to come back to class.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school situation with his Mother and Father. His Mom and Dad were "fairly old-style" and explained to Stephen that dropping out of school was not a workable educational option. They explained to Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would likely be like a lead weight around his ankles that could conceivably hinder his educational achievement for the remainder of his life. Furthermore, Stephen's Mom and Dad were very dissatisfied that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his pals in the second.
It was plain to see that his Mom and Dad were absolutely in accord with Stephen's principal and explained to Stephen that he had better make up his mind to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his conversation with his Mom and Dad, Stephen eventually agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his sixth period class.
When Stephen arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantly analyzed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related actions gave the school administrators room for alarm.
Quite candidly, Stephen questioned why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school counselor. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking behavior? Since almost all of his pals drink the same amount that he does, drinking really shouldn't be such a big issue. Stated more explicitly, if nearly everyone is drinking, why is this such a major concern?
In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to short-circuit his ability to behave like an accountable young man. As articulated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your peers drink wine, wine coolers, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it's the right thing to do for you."
Fortunately, Miss Pender was very organized for her conference with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that listed diverse drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied chiefly to teenagers.
After Miss Pender articulated the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was obvious that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a realization for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to articulate the short term and the long term effects of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction, but she also took the time to substantiate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction statistics and facts that related to everybody in general, and chiefly to teens.
Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen promptly understood why he should not be engaging in abusive and hazardous drinking with or without his peers anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
