Lenny and Angie have been married for four years. They wanted to experience some fun and excitement before they decided to have children and so they intentionally developed an especially vibrant social life.

The major issue, it needs to be pointed out, is that practically everything they do socially is associated with drinking. For example, all of the sporting events, family get-togethers, parties with friends, dinner engagements, and happy hours they patronize have something to do with drinking.

If they were moderate or responsible drinkers this wouldn't be such a big issue. Since they drink in an irresponsible manner, however, they are starting to see some definite alcohol-related difficulties in their lives.

For example, Lenny recently was placed under arrest for his first DWI and has been taking time off from work due to alcohol-related health problems. Not only this, but Lenny's last three performance appraisals at the office have been less than average and he has begun to forget what he says or does while he drinks. Lastly, Lenny has been going through sleep-related problems and his family is starting to exhibit some disquiet about his drinking situation.

Similarly, Angie has been feeling disheartened about life in general and to cope with this, she has been drinking more frequently than any time in the past four years. What is more, Angie has been getting quite a few throbbing headaches and suffering from severe hangovers after drinking. As a final point, Angie has been feeling substantially less energetic when she awakens, she has been showing up late for work, and she has been getting some negative criticism from her friends, family members, coworkers, and relatives about her excessive and unhealthy drinking.

One Tuesday evening while watching the television, Lenny and Angie happened upon a remarkable program about alcohol facts and alcoholism facts in general and about the signs of alcoholism in particular. This TV special was a real eye opener to Angie and Lenny because many of the alcohol facts that were highlighted appeared as if they were unquestionably correlated with more than a few of the drinking difficulties Lenny and Angie had been experiencing.

With thoughts of the television program still etched in her mind, Angie asked Lenny if some of the alcoholism signs they have been displaying could be an indication that they are alcohol dependent or possibly becoming alcohol dependent. Lenny didn't know the answer to Angie's question and so he recommended that they make an appointment with one of the doctors at the local drug and alcohol rehab center to find out more about the seriousness of their drinking issues.

Ironically, although their drinking behavior hadn't yet changed, it was clear to see that Angie and Lenny were at least dealing with their drinking problems, they were excited about finding out more about their drinking situation, and they were concerned about how they could appreciably decrease or do away with the alcohol-related issues that had started to escalate.

When Angie and Lenny went to bed that evening, they decided that the next morning, Lenny would call and make an appointment for both of them at the drug and alcohol abuse treatment facility located downtown just outside of the business district. After they promised one another that they would do whatever it takes to rise above the alcohol-related problems that had materialized in their lives, they actually had the most energizing night's sleep they could recall in the last three months.
