The rockbound hill above the junction of two great European streams Danube and Sava was ideal for constructing the city. Over the centuries, the city has changed countless inhabitants and lords, its physical appearance and size, but never its prominent positioning. Its buildings would whiten to newcomers from the river so it lastly have received the name Beograd (Serbian translation: white city). The visitor who sailed underneath the buildings of Belgrade from far lands would be startled by its powerful fortress, tower size and castle symmetry at the top of the hill. Driven by the river air flow, skimming along with the city, new buildings, streets and squares, ship would at some point find its peace in one of the city's shipping ports. And the traveler which we call tourist today, could see in the ship calendar that the year is 1403, the early beginning of the XV millennium. That year, for the very first time, Belgrade became a capital of Serbia. At that time despot Stefan, the son of prince Lazar, was the lord of Serbia. In search of a destination to establish Serbia's capital on the far north, employing skillful diplomatic negotiations he managed to acquire Belgrade from the Hungarians. It took him only 23 years to turn an absolutely devastated and deserted place into a new and shining city. In Charter issued in the city, despot Stefan wrote: I have found the most wonderful place since the time immemorial, the great city of Belgrade that is by case demolished and deserted. I raised it and dedicated to Holy Virgin.
As educated and refined man, author of the most remarkable lines of old Serbian literature and a passionate reader, Despot Stefan primarily wanted to make Belgrade an economic, cultural and religious center of the country.
With lots of significant economical benefits written in the Charter, which had a golden stamp with the city's picture, Despot Stefan has attracted many retailers, craftsmen and other residents, from his and other countries. Wanting to provide safe lodge to all city's newcomers, despot Stefan initially restored the old fortifications, protective towers and walls.
Stefan then built "The Upper town" and a palace complex as an individual entity shielded by the powerful tower, called Nebojsa, and the entrance with a movable bridge. There he lived along with his family members and other nobles.
Yet, the city life was conducted in the lower city, where the velocity of trade and craft through Despot's reductions was so overwhelming that the city increased tenfold. Apart from the Serbian merchants, Belgrade was predominantly inhabited and visited by the Dubrovnik citizens and the Hungarians, and a smaller number of the French, the Italian, the Venetians and others. In today's conditions, it can be concluded that among other aspects, Belgrade was quite well developed tourist town where people would shop. Belgrade marketplace providing was rich and varied. Most exported goods were ore, lead, copper, mercury and jewelry, gold and silver. Leather, wax and cheese followed. Salt, spices, candies, expensive textiles, clothing and jewelry pearls were imported. This means that the buying power of Belgrade people was at a high level since such a strong demand for expensive items existed. Inside such a richly populated city there was a religious seat of the Serbian state, the chair of the Belgrade metropolitan. For that purpose the despot builds metropolitan church, on the eastern side of the town in a large garden decorated with numerous plantation. Additionally there were a couple of churches and even a Catholic diocese which used by foreigners.
Belgrade reached the growth of this kind thanks to a quiet period and skilled and intelligent policy of Despot Stefan, so the numerous towers and walls did not have to serve to defend against enemies. Visitors from various regions, from the east and west, north and south could safely visit the capital of Serbia.
Belgrade fondly received them and they would have a pleasant memory of it. Belgrade is still such a city - hospitable and welcoming. So pay a visit to Belgrade, a city which became the capital of Serbia 600 years ago for the first-time, and to this day it remained a cultural, economic and tourist center.
And if you are looking for lodging in Belgrade, or as Serbians say smestaj u Beogradu, be our guests in Beograd apartmani and Apartmani Beograd .
