Performance Appraisal Survival Guide

Performance Appraisal Survival Guide
By Roland Poitevin

It is the time of the year when your performance appraisal is just round the corner. Appraisal is primarily done to evaluate your past performance and chart out your future course in the organization. Appraisals are typically done once a year in most companies. In some companies half yearly appraisals are held.

An objective appraisal professionally done benefits both you and the organization you work for. You get feedback on your performance, suggestions for improvement, training needs and goals for the coming year which are aligned to the overall organization strategy/ objectives. Basis your past accomplishments you could also get compensation hike.

Before you go for your appraisal interview and during the course of it there are a few things you can do to make the process effective. Making a list of all that you have accomplished in the last evaluation period is the first step. When you keep a tab of your achievements and projects completed during the course of the year it will be easy to consolidate them at the end. Any appreciation mails or thank you mails/ communication can be taken as evidence too.

During the actual performance appraisal interview it is important to be participative. Give a brief about what you have done, your aspirations and training needs. Be open to listen objectively – you are likely to get positive as well as negative feedback. You can make your point of view clear but without being defensive or offensive. Remaining confident through out the performance evaluation process helps to build a professional image about you. Last but not the least it is crucial to perform all tasks assigned to you on time, every time.

Delivering high quality work, taking ownership of tasks, leadership and assuming extra responsibilities are traits that will get you noticed and pave the way for better roles.

if a potential employer was to do a google search on your name what would they find?

especially if you have an unusual name.

Why don’t you go and do it right now, here’s the search box.

What did it come up with?

Is it something that you are proud to own?

If not there is something you can do about it.

1st step is to go to google, sign up for an account and go into your profile and create it so that it is factual and shows you in a good light.

’til next time,

you are bold, gorgeous, talented and fabulous

When you are employed you ALWAYS have someone who is your customer. Ultimately though it is the group of people who puts money into a business so that you as an employee can be paid.

When you’re preparing for a job interview think about who your customer will be for the position you are applying for and how you can actively demonstrate your capacity to serve them and help them solve their problems.  Do you even have contact with a group of people who could be potential customers for your employer to be – how powerful would that be in an interview?

Here’s a little piece of prose from Mahatma Gandhi on the importance of a customer, it’s good to keep in mind.
Who is a Customer?

  • A Customer is the most important person whether he comes in person, writes to us or telephones.
  • A Customer is not dependent on us, we depend up on him for our living
  • A Customer is not an interruption to our work, he is the purpose of it. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to serve him.
  • A Customer is not someone with whom to argue or match our wits. No one has ever won an argument with a customer.
  • A Customer is a person who comes to use because he needs certain goods. It is our gob to provide them in a way profitable to him and to ourselves.
  • A Customer is not a cold statistic, he is a flesh-and-blood human being with emotions and prejudices like our own.
  • A Customer is the most important person in this firm, for without him there would be no business.

We all need one, don’t we, I’ve always enjoyed the process described here. Try it and let me know how you like it. You’ll find the authors information at the bottom of the article

Do you think it can help you cope with your challenges each day? Are you worried about sales, taxes, competition and your work schedule? Here is an excellent exercise to help you cope with your workday. Try it every morning. Let’s see how self-hypnosis and relaxation can help. The purpose of this section is for you to learn how to relax in just a few moments. When you use several of these moments during a typical work or school day, you will find very wonderful results. Just as it takes many repetitions of angry moments or stressful periods of time during the day to build up stress. It will take many repetitions of calm and peaceful periods of time to build a perfect “mental vacation.”

To begin this vacation you may want to print these directions out and then either read them aloud to yourself or read them into a recording device. When you read them to yourself or into a device, picture yourself relaxing very deeply while you give yourself these suggestions. Whenever you see the following symbol, ….., this will signal you to pause as you read or talk to yourself. Pause from 20 to 30 seconds at first. After you are finding yourself relaxing very deeply, you may want to change your pause to just three or four seconds. Are you ready?

Lets see how much we can really relax using this technique. My Vacation Begins! I will begin the relaxation process by focusing in my mind on a place where I always have total peace….. It may be resting beside a stream or a lake…. it may be watching the waves on the ocean…. It may be a scene high up in the mountains…. or it may be in the comfort of my own bed. Whatever I place in my mind I use for my vacation.

The image I find will be the correct one. As I think about this scene…. my body is relaxing, deeply relaxing…. All of my muscles are going loose, and limp, and perfectly relaxed. Each and every deep breath that I take is relaxing me deeply. Nothing will disturb me during my vacation.

If an emergency happens, I know I can respond very quickly….. My mind is keenly alert and aware, while my body relaxes, perfectly….. I am taking a very deep breath now….. As I inhale I notice how my chest expands to take in each cleansing breath. As I exhale, I notice how all of the tension leaves my lungs….. I feel good, I feel fine, I feel perfectly and completely, relaxed….. Nothing will disturb me. Each and every breath that I take is assisting me in relaxing deeply, soundly and perfectly.

I am thinking about a place that is very relaxing….. As I firmly picture that place in my mind, my body relaxes perfectly. All of my cares are just drifting away. I may feel myself relaxing in this very calm and peaceful place. I feel and see and hear and smell this scene of deep, relaxation. All of my cares are drifting away. I know I can always bring them back when I want to, but I prefer to let them drift away….. As my cares are drifting away….. My body relaxes deeply, soundly and perfectly….. When I go to bed tonight, I will sleep soundly as well. I will let all the tension of the day drift off into space.

Now I am ready to emerge from this wonderful state of mind. Whatever was bothering me before this session will cease to bother me at all. Whenever I use this exercise, I will find myself relaxing very quickly and very deeply. At the count of three, I will emerge from this condition. One….. Two…..Three….. I am wide awake….. alert….. and feeling good in every way!

How are you feeling? I hope you are feeling great. This exercise may take you three to five minutes initially. Read this script into a tape recorder or other recording device. Use it any time you desire. The best time to beat stress is before it has a chance to take hold. Use this exercise before entering those stressful periods of the day. This will make it harder for stress to take hold. Then, use it while going through periods of stress.

Finally, use it just after a stressful period. Once you practice this exercise, you will be able to relax in just about a minute. Five or ten strategically placed “mental vacations,” will vastly improve your life.

It really is amazing when you set an intention before you begin a project, seminar, day, piece of work, conversation, job hunt… anything. Let me explain. About one month ago I had the very great pleasure of attending and PARTICIPATING in the an incredible 3 days of experiential business games called Play to Win. At the outset we were asked to write down what we intended to get out of the 3 days. I wrote “to make 3 amazing contacts” Well, one month on I have to say this has proven to be true, and multiplied even. I have started to build not 3 but 4 mutually beneficial relationships as a direct result of the 3 days and my written intention.

This is so applicable with your job hunting too. Close your eyes for a moment and picture yourself shaking hands with your new employer. Feels good, doesn’t it. Now open your eyes, focus and commit to making one or more new contacts everyday with the intent that one of those people will be instrumental in helping you get a job. Powerful stuff.

I just came across this terrific little free online speed typing test, it uses the most common words in the English language, my score was 74 words per minute

Go here: http://speedtest.10-fast-fingers.com

to try it out for yourself then come back and make a comment about how many words per minute you typed at.  Because it uses the most common English words if you just did this little one minute test every day for a month your speed would increase and the words you are learning to type quickly are the most used.  A great little resource for you.

Another free typing site I like is

Enjoy
