OK, when do you start thinking about your next performance appraisal?
Probably about one week before your next performance appraisal is due, just to be clear, if you have a performance appraisal in one week’s time and your next appraisal AFTER that one is in 6 months, then it’s time to start thinking about the appraisal in 6 months time, one week before your current appraisal. That sounds very contorted here is it in tabular format:
Today’s date 21 October, 2009
Next performance appraisal 28 October, 2009
and your next performance appraisal AFTER 28 October, 2009 is 28 April, 2010
Then the time to start thinking and planning for your April 2010 appraisal is TODAY 21, October, 2009.
If you’ve left your 28 October appraisal planning until now, forget it, it’s going to be a tough sell for you.
Two critical points about performance appraisals are to get a clear indication of WHAT you are being assessed on and what KPIs, KRAs you can set / negotiate for (April 2010). Once this is clear it’s just a matter of making sure you meet them and KEEP RECORDS of meeting and exceeding them.
The other critical point is to set your own personal KPIs and KRAs. This will keep you interested and growing as a person and a professional These KPIs can be work or personally related.
And here I will quote Jim Rohn
work on your job and you earn a living, work on yourself and you can create a fortune
til next time
you are bold, gorgeous, fabulous and talented, and more so every day.
